    John Chester Button was Squadron Leader of No. 193 Squadron from D-Day - June 6th, 1944 to August 24th, 1944, later took over as Wing Commander of No. 123 Wing in January 1945.

    "This officer leads a squadron which has achieved many conspicuous successes. Before the landings in Normandy he participated in attacks on heavily defended Radar stations, the elimination of which was vital to the success of the landings. Since then he has led many attacks on ground targets, including ammunition dumps, enemy Headquarters,
    bridges and transport. His brilliant leadership and selfless devotion to duty have been an inspiration to all members of the squadron he commands."

    "Button has led his wing in an outstanding manner throughout the intensive period of operations since January 1945. In February 1945 his wing gave the closest possible support to the army in Hochswald and Reichswald areas where, in spite of intense anti-aircraft opposition many strong-points gun positions and enemy concentrations were successfully attacked under his leadership.
    During March 1945, Button led rocket and bombing attacks on at least nine enemy headquarters. During the crossing of the Rhine his wing was detailed to operate against enemy anti-aircraft guns. His courage and keenness during this operation was an inspiration to all under his command.
    Button has also taken part in attacks on enemy shipping. He has set a fine example of initiative and courage in action."

    "Has distinguished himself against the enemy by acts of initiative, bravery and perseverance during one or more sorties in an aircraft, by his acting as commander of a Wing RAF fighterplanes giving direct support to the First Canadian Army in battle from January until May 1945, in which period his Wing had to attack frequently under heavy enemy anti-aircraft fire. By his conduct he served the interests of the Dutch State."
