The following wartime excerpt describes why Faasch would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“The holding of Baryschewka (east of Kiev) against the furious enemy breakthrough attempts there was a combat achievement of Infanterie-Regiment 164 brought about with violence and much sacrifice. The consequence of this action was the capture of around 10000 men, at least 200 guns and uncounted additional equipment near Baryschewka and Dorschtschew. Oberstleutnant Faasch had a decisive share in the bitter resistance of his Regiment during this extremely dangerous time, which took place during the battle of Kiev (20.-29.09.1941).”
