Here follows an abbreviated Knight’s Cross recommendation for Hermann Kreß…
“During the encirclement of Antonowka in September 1941, Oberst Kreß and his Regiment were able to reach their directed attack objectives. However in light of an accurate judgement of the overall situation, Kreß decided on his own initiative to continue attacking with his men, while leading them personally from the front.
The result of this decision was the surrounding and destruction of elements of the desperately defending foe. The successful conclusion of the encirclement battle at Antonowka is primarily due to the initiative, attacking spirit and bravery of the Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 99 and its commander, who demanded the utmost of himself. The victorious conclusion of this battle gave freedom of action to the Korps and paved the way for a breakout from the narrow Dnieper bridgehead east of Berislawl towards the east.”
