On the 30.07.1942 a detachment from the 3./Regiment z.b.V. 800 commanded by Leutnant Hein was ordered to capture the 500 metre long dam over the Manytsch river. Present among this unit was the combat interpreter Leutnant Adrian von Foelkersam.

The Russians saw through the Brandenburgers’ disguises and a firefight broke out. Von Foelkersam took advantage of the confusion and jumped into the sluice with an MG team. They swam through it to the other side of the river and from there captured and held the sluice house for the entire day while under enemy fire. On the following day the dam fell into German hands in an undamaged state, and on the day after that the 3. Panzer-Division rolled across the dam towards its own objectives. Von Foelkersam was recommended for the Knight’s Cross shortly afterwards for the role he played in this success.
