The following press article describes why Major Friedrich would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“In the middle of December 1943 Major Werner Friedrich held his positions northwest of Newel against all attacks of the numerically superior enemy. Despite being encircled in his command post several times, he repeatedly busted the enemy ring with the few Grenadiers available to him and threw back the Soviets via counterthrusts. On the 26.12.1943 Major Friedrich (who had died just a few days prior on the 23.12.1943) received the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross for his brave conduct.”
