Citation:
"For extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier-based Navy Torpedo Plane in Torpedo Squadron SIX (VT-6), attached to the U.S.S. HANCOCK (CV-19), in action against enemy forces in the Kure Harbor, Japan, on 24 July 1945. Participating in an aggressive attack against major units of the Japanese Fleet, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Hoge courageously maneuvered his plane in a low-level torpedo run against a large aircraft carrier and, in the face of intense enemy anti-aircraft fire, pressed his attack to point-blank range to score a direct hit which inflicted extensive damage on the hostile vessel. By his superb airmanship and gallant fighting spirit, he contributed materially to the success of the mission, and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
