"For extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. SUNFISH (SS-281), on the FOURTH War Patrol of that submarine during the period 28 July 1943 to 25 September 1943, in enemy controlled waters of the East China Sea. Taking advantage of every favorable opportunity, Commander Peterson, with superb skill and fearless persistence, pressed home a series of attacks which resulted in the sinking or damaging of an important amount of hostile shipping. Through his expert seamanship and sound judgment Commander Peterson brought his ship safely back to port. His cool courage in the face of great personal danger was an inspiration to his officers and men and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
