For having displayed high courage, tact, ability and perseverance as commander of Our Submarine ‘Zwaardvisch’ — Swordfish — during two patrols in August and October 1944 respectively:
1. During a patrol on the Sea of Java, despite strong enemy opposition having successfully launched a short range torpedo attack in daylight on a tightly protected Japanese mine laying vessel of 35 tonnes, ending in the sinking of said vessel.
2. In addition, during this patroil having sunk one German U-boat, two freighters, a tanker and almost certainly a second Japanse mine layer of the same time of the first.
