"For gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 26 September 1944 near ****, Holland. One company had been seriously depleted because of casualties sustained in an effort to hold a strategic ridge extending well into enemy territory. Staff Sergeant Ferrone, Mess Sergeant, though he had very little field training, voluntarily took over the duties of squad leader. His position was attacked by tanks heavily supported by infantry and flame throwers. As a tank approached, Staff Sergeant Ferrone's position he moved into the open and with his one remaining round of bazooka ammunition made a direct hit on the tank. It retreated and relieved a serious threat to his squad's positions. During this action a machine gunner was killed. Staff Sergeant Ferrone, without hesitation manned the machine gun and brought such effective fire upon the attacking infantry that they were completely routed and forced to withdraw after suffering high casualties. Staff Sergeant Ferrone, by his outstanding example of individual initiative and gallant action, was such an inspiration to the members of his squad that they manned their positions and fought fiercely, disregarding the intense machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire. Under his courageous leadership the squad repelled a serious threat to his position and assisted greatly in accomplishing the mission of the company. Staff Sergeant Ferrone's gallantry reflects the highest credit upon himself and the United States Army."
