"For gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, in action on 2 October 1944, about one mile from ****, Holland. Captain Pierce, Company Commander, showed coolness and courage while leading his company in assault against tremendous odds with a minimum of losses. He delivered heavy fire on bitterly defended enemy positions, but where the Germans defended a strongly fortified group of buildings, the advance of Captain Pierce's company was temporarily held up. The friendly tanks in support of the attack were unable to locate the enemy strong point. With utter disregard of his own personal safety, Captain Pierce voluntarily exposed himself to the enemy and walked boldly up to the building from which the fire was coming. He waved a white handkerchief as a signal to the tanks to indicate their target. The enemy strongpoint was neutralized and the attack repulsed. The courage of Captain Pierce was an inspiration to his entire company and helped carry them through many strenuous and hazardous hours. His outstanding leadership and gallantry in action were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service."
