He particularly distinguished himself on the night of the 18/19.09.1939, where he found himself surrounded by a superior Polish force near Tuchowice with an Abteilung of his Division. He not only broke through the Polish encirclement ring (thereby linking up with the remainder of the Division) but also managed to take 2 Polish generals and 10000 men prisoner in the process.
