Awarded for his actions during the Polish campaign of 1939. He particularly distinguished himself on the night of the 18/19.09.1939, where he found himself surrounded by a superior Polish force near Tuchowice with an Abteilung of his Division. He not only broke through the Polish encirclement ring (thereby linking up with the remainder of the Division) but also managed to take 2 Polish generals and 10000 men prisoner in the process.

In the great defensive battle in the area of Vitebsk which is ongoing since 13 December 1943, our troops under the command of Colonel-General Reinhardt have blocked the operational breakthrough of our front by the Soviets, who deployed about 50 infantry divisions and numerous armored units, in hard fighting, and inflicted heavy losses on the enemy.
Awarded as commander of the 3. Panzer-Armee for his achievements while commanding this formation during the successful defensive battles north of Smolensk in the winter of 1943/44.
