Awarded for distinguishing himself as a Kampfgruppe commander during the First Battle of Vitebsk and Operation Bagration. On the 27.06.1944 Gruppe von Monteton was positioned between Tschaschniki an der Ulla and Lepel. During the morning of this day several local enemy penetrations were defeated in boldly led counterthrusts by small groups. However during the afternoon the Soviets achieved an approximately 5 km deep penetration to the southwest and west of Tschaschniki, forcing the creation of a new delaying position 12 km west of the old frontline without any contact to the left or right. Oberst von Monteton fell during the heavy combat on this day near Stai (west of Lepel), and thus would receive the Knight’s Cross posthumously.
