Citation:
"First Lieutenant Donald J. Hettrick, 01 172 904, (then Second Lieutenant), Parachute Field Artillery, while serving with the Army of the United States, distinguished himself by meritious service in action. On 9 October 1944, in the vicinity of Zetten, Holland, he was forward observer for his artillery unit in support of an infantry company.
When the enemy launched an attack on the infantry company, he was in an observation post which was subjected to heavy enemy artillery fire. Despite the enemy fire, Second Lieutenant Hettrick remained in his position and fired many concentrations against the enemy. A concentration of direct enemy artillery fire covered the observation post, forcing Lieutenant Hettrick and his men to seek cover. When the enemy barrage lifted, the group again assumed its position in the shelled building, repaired the radio which had been damaged, and continued to adjust fire on the enemy. Lieutenant Hettrick and his men remained at their dangerous post for several hours and aided repelling the strong enemy attack. His actions were in accordance with the highest standards of the military service. Entered military service from New York."
