    Biography

    Dirk van Ooijen was born on 23rd November 1911 in Etten-Leur, the Netherlands. He emigrated in 1931 from his place of living Ginneken, the Netherlands to Canada. When war broke out, he volunteerd for the Canadian Voluntary Navy (service number V-8608) and sailed as steward on several ships.
    He died on January 28th 1944 during a collision between two ships on the Atlantic Ocean.

    H.M.S. Mahone 19-02-1943

    The H.M.S. Mahone collided with the SS. Fort Townsend on January 28th 1944. Both ships were able to reach Louisbourg harbour. After this, Dirk van Ooijen was reported missing.
