Citation:
"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in Belgium, 12 January 1945. When one platoon of his company failed to receive an order to withdraw during a heavy enemy artillery, machine gun and small arms barrage, First Sergeant Bell who had assumed command when his
company commander became a casualty, after having withdrawn one platoon, returned to the line of fire and successfully led the remaining platoon to the rear. Though wounded in this action, First Sergeant Bell reorganized the company and placed it in command of an officer before submitting to evacuation. The courage, initiative and superior performance of duty displayed by First Sergeant Bell reflect high credit upon himself and are in accordance with the finest traditions of the military service."
