When his platoon moved out of its entrenched positions to push into Rheinbreitbach, it was met with sharp and accurate machine gun fire. Private First Class Johnson, antitank grenadier, was struck in the mouth and hand. Although bleeding considerately, he refused to take cover and moved alone against the enemy gunner in a crouching stance. After firing one clip at the enemy gunner, he reloaded and continued his advance , firing as he went, until he destroyed the enemy and siezed the gun. Private First Class Johnson's courage and devotion to duty are in accordance with the highest military traditions."
