The following wartime excerpt describes why von Erdmannsdorff would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberst von Erdmannsdorff has already distinguished himself during the defense of Tikhvin and the retreat to behind the Volkhov river as the acting commander of the 18. Infanterie-Division (mot), a post which he took up on the 17.12.1941. In the more recent operations it was primarily to his credit that the city of Staraya Russa was held despite the enemy’s vastly superior numbers. This decisive defensive success provided the higher commands with the opportunity to bring up new forces for the prevention of an enemy breakthrough and thereafter carry out new friendly operations at the appropriate time.”
918th Heer Award.
