The following wartime excerpt describes why von Esebeck would be awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Oberst Freiherr von Esebeck led his Abteilung with audacity and decisiveness during an assault that succeeded in capturing Fortress Epinal. The breakthrough of this line of forts was all the more impressive given that the enemy was still offering resistance in the forts as well as the terrain in-between them. Freiherr von Esebeck also repeatedly distinguished himself from the attack against the Maas river all the way up to reaching the French coast.”
116th Award.
