First Lieutenant Michael Hanna, O-1325567 (then second lieutenant), Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operation against an enemy of the United States in the *** sector, Normandy, France, 15 July 1944. Lieutenant Hanna led the first platoon, Company C, 134th Infantry , and was advancing at the front of his men when he received a severe wrist wound. Despite loss of blood and an increasingly weakening condition, he refused evacuation and insisted upon first returning to his platoon, which was then being subjected to intense enemy fire of all types. Returning to the front lines, he withdrew the platoon, reorganized it, and only after having checked the situation thoroughly with his platoon sergeant, and assuring himself that he could do nothing further at that time would he permit himself to be evacuated. The leadership displayed by Lieutenant Hanna, his devotion to duty regardless of his injury, and his zeal for the success of his platoon, reflect credit upon his character as an officer, and upon the military service.
Entered military service from Pennsylvania.
