For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, on November 20, 1943. Bravely leading his squad to the flank of a large enemy pillbox, Sergeant Farris skillfully moved forward under covering fire of his men and succeeded in neutralizing the hostile emplacement with grenades and rifle fire, thereby enabling his company to advance. Mortally wounded during the subsequent engagement with the enemy, Sergeant Farris, by his outstanding courage, daring initiative and indomitable fighting spirit served to inspire all who observed him and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.`
