Charles-André Schommer was born in Luxemburg. Following the German invasion in May 1940, he left the country with his family. Via France, Spain and Portugal, the Schommer family reached the United States. Meantime, Charles-André’s father was employed as representative of the Luxemburg government in exile in London.
Charles-André voluntarily joined the U.S. Army and in doing so obtained US citizenship.
After the war he returned to Luxemburg, losing his US citizenship for having remained too long outside the US. As he had also lost his Luxemburg citizenship, he remained stateless for a while.
He spent a large part of his life in Brittany. In 2009 he passed away in his town of birth, Luxemburg.
