“During a temporary cessation of the advance in the action  near Beaulieu Ain-Seba, French Morocco, on 10 November 1942, Pvt Hemmenway, together with four other men, volunteered in the early hours of the morning to rescue a number of wounded soldiers of a patrol that had fallen within the lines of the enemy. On their return trip with the wounded it was necessary for them to defend themselves against machine gun and rifle fire aimed directly at them. These men made the forward and return trips under constant heavy artillery and machine gun fire.. Their conduct was an example and an inspiration to all others of their battalion, and reflects great credit upon themselves and the military service.”
