Biography

Sergeant Michael Strank was the leader of the group U.S. Marines who was immortalized by Joe Rosenthal's famous World War II photograph Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima.
After the fall of Mount Suribachi, he moved northward with his unit. On 1 March 1945, while attacking Japanese positions in northern Iwo Jima, he was fatally wounded by enemy artillery fire.
On 13 January 1949, his remains were reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery.
