"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Marianas Islands on 22 July 1944. When a strong hostile night counter attack penetrated his Battalion's sector Major Hoyler went to the front lines to estimate the situation and direct his troops. Skillfully maneuvering his forces, he succeeded in throwing back the enemy assault annihilating over two hundred and fifty of the Japanese during the course of the action. His courage, tactical skill and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Major Hoyler and the United States Naval Service."
