For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy forces on Tinian, Marianas Islands. Shortly after landing on Tinian, on 24 July, 1944, the machine gun, of which Corporal DuBeck was in command, was destroyed by the enemy. At the same time a squad leader of a rifle squad was wounded. Corporal DuBeck, seeing that his machine gun was inoperative, immediately took command of the rifle squad and continued to lead it towards an enemy pillbox. His leadership was responsible for knocking out this pocket of enemy resistance. Shortly thereafter, while continuing to lead this squad, Corporal DuBeck was wounded by enemy fire. His initiative, presence of mind, and fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
