"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company D, Second Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 18 May 1945. When his platoon was ordered to attack one of the most heavily-defended key points on the Naha-Shuri line, First Lieutenant Smith moved forward through enemy fire and, after thoroughly familiarizing himself with the terrain in his zone of advance, remained well in the lead during the ensuing assault. Once on the objective, he participated in the hand-to-hand fighting, moving along the line at great risk to his life to give instructions and encouragement to the men. His indomitable fighting spirit, determination and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
