“In the heavy defensive battles around Gotenhafen the cut-off men of the Marine-Flak-Batterie “Völtzendorf” held their tactically important position against the enemy with unbreakable steadfastness. Only after firing their last rounds and destroying their guns did they fight their way back to German lines. During the breakout the Batterie-Chef, Kapitänleutnant der Marineartillerie Maes, found a heroes’ death.”
