Biography

James Howard entered service on October 22nd, 1940 at Fort Niagara, New York. He served on the European theatre. He was honorably discharged as Technical Sergeant on April 15th, 1945 and was directly re-enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant. He left for the United States again on November 3rd, 1945, to arrive there on November 10th. He was honorably discharged on December 5th, 1945.

"For meritious achievement in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in France and Germany from 17 September 1944 to 1 April 1945. While leading an ammunition and pioneer platoon, sergeant HOWARD braved intense enemy fire on many occaisions to supply front line troops. In the Saar river crossing he personally supervised and led carrying parties with ammunition, food and vutal supplies, repeatedly crossing the river in the face of intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire.Sergeant Howard's indomitable courage, superior judgement and untiring devotion to duty inspired his men and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Army of the United States."
