Biography
John Tomas William Lawrence entered the Massachusetts State Guard on June 26th, 1943. Here he was as Private part of the 19th Company, 23rd Infantry. He was induced to the U.S. Army on September 26th, 1944 with the effective day of September 14th.
After completing Advanced Infantry Training, he was shipped overseas in March 1945 joining "E" Company, 310th Combat Infantry Regiment, 78th Infantry Division in Europe. Following two tours of occupation duties (71st and First Infantry Divisions) in Europe, he returned home, receiving an honorable discharge.

Citation:
"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 7 April 1945, in Germany. Private Frist Class Lawrence was attached to the 774th Tank Battalion as a machine gunner. He remained at his gun under constant sniper and machine gun fire, clearing houses of snipers, reducing machine gun nests and supplying steady covering fire for the advancing rifleman. His courageous action under fire and unswerving devotion to duty are in accordance with the highest military traditions. Private First Class Lawrence's exemplary performance of duty in active ground combat was in keeping with the finest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 310th Infantry Regiment, and the United States Army."
