Citation:
"For Conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in sotion against the enemy on OKINAWA SHIMA, RHUKYU ISLANDS, on 13 June, 1945. Although suffering from a sever wound which he received early in the campaign, when it came to his attention that there were insufficient corpsmen, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class MILLER requested a release to duty on the front lines. ON reporting there, he did brilliant work in treating many seriously wounded men under intense enemy artillery, mortar and small arms fire. His platoon was committed to take a strategic enemy position remaining in the last bitterly contested enemy pocket and was receiving heavy casualties. When he discovered that a Marine had been wounded severely, Pharmacist’s Mate Third Class MILLER advanced to treat him. Dragging him to a defiladed position, he administered morphine and blood plasma, then supervised his evacuation to safety. While treating this casualty, he was caught in the enemy fire and received a serious abdominal wound, and although he was told to await evacuation by a stretcher team, he, realizing the danger to them in an attempted rescue, crawled over one hundred yards to a place where he could be reached without endangering his comrades’ lives. His selfless and inspirational devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services."
