Walter Herold was killed on November 28th, 1944 by partisans near Bochnia, Poland. He was posthumously promoted to Generalmajor.

Awarded for the role that his artillery played in assisting the hard-pressed infantry of the 10. Infanterie-Division (mot) during its defense of Propoisk in the time period 19.-25.07.1941. Although the German defenders were almost pushed to breaking point, they ultimately managed to crush the Soviet breakthrough attempt towards the east. In this battle Oberstleutnant Herold and his Artillerie-Regiment magnificently supported the infantry, being successful in smashing Soviet assembly areas on multiple occasions. Herold would be recognized appropriately for his outstanding leadership here.
