Edward A. Monahan, Jr., 31019445, Technical Sergeant, Infantry, United States Army, for meritorious achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on 11 March 1944. During the operations against the enemy on Hill 260, Sergeant Monahan, a member of an infantry company, left the cover of his own position during an enemy bayonet attack and advanced to a forward observation post under heavy enemy mortar fire on the advancing enemy troops. When the bayonet attack ceased, the enemy increased fire on our positions and many casualties were suffered, causing a withdrawal to be ordered. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Monahan aided in the removal of the wounded and by his courage and coolness under fire, was an inspiration to all his men.
Headquarters, Americal Division, General Orders No. 120 (28 July 1944).
