John Moore was living in or around Melbourne when he enlisted. He was a secondary school teacher prior to enlisting and specialised in agricultural science, physics and chemistry.
He later saw service in Malta, the Middle East and North Africa rising to the rank of flight lieutenant.

This airman invariably displays contempt for danger, pressing home his attacks regardless of any opposition. His cheerful bearing and devotion to duty are worthy of the highest praise".
