Citation:
"For meritorious service in combat from 11 May 1944 to 2 May 1945 in Italy. Sergeant Eastridge entered combat as a Private in a 60 mm Mortar Section, and he served faithfully and unstintingly on all occasions. His efficiency in this position was greatly responsible for the company’s many successes. Although displaying great endurance and superb initiative throughout the drive to Rome and the Volterra Push, it was during this Gothic Line Offensive that Sergeant Eastridge (then Private), manned his gun single-handedly after his comrades had fallen all around him. Despite the hell of mortar and artillery barrages covering the area about him, Sergeant Eastridge stayed at his position until his ammunition was exhausted, firing with deadly accuracy into the ranks of the attacking enemy. He then boldly moved among the wounded, ignoring the deadly small arms and machine gun fire that sprayed the area about him, carrying countless numbers to safety. The splendid qualities of leadership displayed by Sergeant Eastridge during these trying times was recognized by his promotion to Squad Leader in October and later, Platoon Sergeant. His unswerving loyalty and devotion to duty, coupled with his ability to lead and handle men have ever been a radiant inspiration to the entire company."
