"For heroic action against the enemy on 10 January 1945 at Manaoag, Luzon, Philippines Islands. The battalion was advancing, astride the road. As the leading elements approached a cemetery they came under heavy fire from the enemy field pieces, halting the advance of the battalion. Private First Class Brophy, as a member of the bazooka team encircled the enemy gun position, killed an enemy officer and six men and destroyed a vehicle making the remainder of the enemy withdraw, thus enabling the battalion to continue its advance. By his courageous action and disregard of his own safety, Private First Class Brophy undoubtedly saved numerous lives and aided the battalion in its advance and eventual capture of Manaoag."
