Martin E. Schakelaar was a member of the resistance during the Second World War. After the war he served with 3-7 Regiment Stoottroepen. He left pon board the Alcantra from England to Malaya in September 1945. Hereafter he served at Banka and Sumatra. He returned to the Netherlands in April 1948.
