During the fighting in mid-August 1944 the 69. Infanterie-Division was pushed back by strong Soviet forces through the area north of Kowno up to Szaki. As this retreat was taking place the Division was overtaken on both sides by Soviet forces and threatened with encirclement. In response Oberleutnant Heinze assembled all available forces nearby and engaged with the enemy. After two separate attacks he managed to throw the Soviets back and prevent the encirclement of the Division.
This achievement would not have been possible without the energy and skillful leadership of Heinze himself, and in recognition of this feat he would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
