"On 26 Feb 1945 during the battle of Hill 500, in Luzon, the troop Commander of Weapons Troop, Sgt Mullens and the 81st mm Motor Platoon were assigned a perminter defense postion on a hill adjacent to and overlooking Hill 500, Troop "A", 8th Cavalry, assaulted Hill 500 to the left of St Mullen's position several times but were repulsed each time. Noting that Troop "A" was suffering heavy casualties vecause of lack of sufficent covering fire, Sgt Mullens left his protected postion adn ran tho where a .50 caliber machine-gun had been set up, adn under a withring hail of enemy's small arms and maching-gun fire, manned this maching-gun adn wiped out five eneby machine-gun nest, thus enabling Troop "A" to take Hill 500 and to completely rout the enemy. By this exemplary and meritorious service, Sgt Mullens contriubted in a large measure to the succes of the 8th Cavalry Regiment in the liberation of the Philippines."
