Biography

In spring 1918, Hemingway volunteered for the Red Cross and was deployed as a driver in Italy. During the Austrian foray in the second Battle of Piave River he was seriously wounded by a shell splinter near Fossalta di Piave on 8 July 1918 and was admitted to a military hospital for an extensive stay. Hemingway was the second American to be wounded in Italy. He described his wartime experiences in his novel "In Another Country". A memorial was erected in Fossalta di Piave in his memory.
