Biography

John Dorfling BOND was born on September 30th, 1906 at Nkandla, Zululand, South Africa as the son of William Henry Bond and Gertrude Frederica Dorfling. He was the youngest of 5 children. His mother was pregnant with him when the family was evacuated due to the Bambatha rebellion.

He enlisted at Britstown, South Africa on May 28th, 1940 as a mechanic. He was 31 at that time. He attested that he had served for 5 years as a Sergeant in the U.M.R. or Umvoti Mounted Rifles (founded in 1862). He later married and in his will, dated February 2nd, 1945 lists a wife living Bredasdorp. He completed his Trade Test as a mechanic on 18 February 1944. He was discharged on September 24th, 1945. He did not claim a pension and went on to work for the Provincial Roads department of the Cape Province in South Africa. Home address 3 Caladon Street, Goodwood, Cape Town. John Dorfling Bond never went back to Zululand after his discharge and continued to live in the Cape Province for the remainder of his life with his wife and two daughters.
