Biography

Robert F. Walske entered service at Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 15th, 1942. He left for the European Theatre of war on December 17th, 1943 to arrive there on December 25th. After servinghis time inItaly he left for the United States again on August 14th, 1945 to arrive there on August 22nd. He was honorably discharged on October 17th, 1945.

Citation:
"For heroic achievement in action from 2 March 1944 to 4 March 1945, in Italy. During the entire period of combat operation Sergeant WALSKE has rendered invaluable service to his company, carrying out his duties as squad leader with agressiveness and skill. At Mount Damiano, Italy, he exhibited the courage and excellent qualities of leadership which have characterized his actions through many months of combat. His coolness under fire and his resourcefulness displayed while on combat patrol missions set an inspiring example to the inexperienced troops. At the start of offensive operations on 11 May 1944, Sergeant WALSKE played an importand part in breaching the initial German defences when he led his men safeley through a mine infested field to assault enemypositions. The actions of this sergeant were a deciding factor in the successful attack on Mount de Vinio when, through heavy enemy fire, he led his men in a courageous assault, killing five Germansand aiding in the capture of nineteen. When the regiment fought through the Gothic Line defenses, Sergeant WALSKE contributed greatly to the success of repeated attacks against determined resistance and his unfailing courage and endurance were outstanding. Sergeant WALSKE has won the high regard of all who know him and his actions typify the best traditions of the military service."
