Private Walter R. Werner, 33836520, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the Forest of ***, France on 12 November 1944. When the advance of his platoon through the Forest of *** was halted by enemy machine gun fire from the front, Private Werner, a bazooka gunner, discovering that the enemy was emplaced in the second story of a building, moved to a partly exposed position and from a distance of 150 yards, silenced the German machine gun by firing one round of ammunition. This action enabled his platoon to resume its progress. It was later found that Private Werner’s accurate fire had destroyed two enemy machine guns and killed three German soldiers. Private Werner’s disregard for personal safety and remarkable adeptness with his weapon reflect credit upon his character and training as a soldier.
Entered military service from Pennsylvania.
For action performed on 12 November 1944, near Château-Salins/Moselle department, Lorraine, France.
