Staff Sergeant Jacob J. Sass, 37034234, Infantry, United States Army, for heroic service in connection with military operations against an enemy of the United States in the vicinity of ***[Saint-Lô], France, on 18 July 1944. Following a withdrawal forced by a strong enemy counterattack, the Third Battalion, 134th Infantry, planned a reorganization requiring vital enemy information as a prerequisite to resumption of the battalion attack. Sergeant Sass led a combat patrol which succeeded in obtaining valuable information but, while so engaged, was subjected to intense fire from an enemy machine gun. Leading his men in a fire fight, Sergeant Sass neutralized the enemy gun emplacement and enabled his patrol to return to its unit without casualties. The leadership, devotion to duty tenacity of purpose on the part of Sergeant Sass reflect credit upon his character as a soldier.
