Edwin W. Schroeder, 37111153, Sergeant, Company B, 760th Tank Battalion, for gallantry in action, in the vicinity of Mt. Porchia, Italy. On the 6th and 7th of January 1944, Company B was engaged in operations along Highway 6 in the vicinity of Mt. Porchia, Italy. On 6 January Sergeant Schroeder received shrapnel wounds in the left shoulder and on the back of his head, but with disregard for his own well-being and with no medical aid other than that given to him by members of his crew, he stayed in action. On 7 January, although wounded from the previous day’s fighting, Sergeant Schroeder moved his tank forward and supported the attack on Mt. Porchia by fire and movement until his tank became stuck. He and his crew remained in the tank firing on enemy positions until enemy anti-tank and artillery fire became so intense that the tank had to be abandoned. He then led his crew to protective cover to the rear. On this movement to the rear he assisted in evacuating some wounded infantrymen. When the artillery fire became less intense he returned to the tank with part of his crew and unmindful of great danger from flying shrapnel, he got another tank to pull his tank out of the mud. He then put his tank into action at a time when it was badly needed. His courageous and inspiring action exemplifies the highest traditions of the service. Entered military service from Iowa.
