Citation:
"For gallantry in action. On 5th of April, 1943, southeast of El Guettar, Tunisia, the third platoon was ordered to attack the hill at its front. Six platoon scouts preceded the unit and crossed a wide flat wadi under flanking machine gun and heavy artillery fire. As soon as the scouts entered a gully on the opposite hill, mortar fire was directed in their midst. The remainder of the platoon utilized a new route thus separating the platoon scouts from their unit and left them isolated. Private Joseph A. Selvaggio assumed control of the scouts and led them up the narrow gully to better cover. For a period of seven hours these men were under constant artillery and mortar fire. Private Selvaggio remained cool and kept up the spirit of the men and at nightfall led them back to safety."
