Citation:
"For Gallantry, leadership and commonance, on 22/1/1944 he was Forward Observation Officer with a detached company of 2/4 KOYLI on the Provincia feature. In order to get observation, he had to move about from point to point under considerable S.A fire, in spite of which he carried out several effective shoots. Late in the afternoon, a determined counter attack developed, which was held off at revolver range of the O.P. After dark, it was decided to withdraw the company at short notice, during which it lost direction, come under mortar fire and became involved in a fire fight. The Company Commander was wounded, after which Capt Levett kept his head admirably and was largely responsible for leading them to their proper destination, across very difficult country, misleadingly-mapped and on a moonless night. The acting C.O. of the Battalion spoke to me very highly of his conduct afterwards and expressed his intention of recommending him for an award. I said I would initiate it myself to save him trouble. I suggest that this account might be forwarded to him for any comments."
