Carley W. Biles, 14009301, Staff Sergeant, Infantry, United States Army. For gallantry in action, on 30 January 1944, near Cairo, Italy. Staff Sergeant Biles command his tank in destroying two enemy tanks. During this action a third German tank scored a direct hit on his own vehicle, killing one crew member and wounding another. While subjected to heavy enemy fire, Staff Sergeant Biles rendered first aid to the wounded man and assisted by his gunner, started to remove the soldier to safety. A hostile machine gun opened fire, wounding the gunner. Staff Sergeant Biles assisted in removing both wounded men to cover and then went several hundred yards through heavy enemy fire and across mined ground to secure medical assistance. Finding no litter bearers available, he returned to the wounded men, placed them on the rear deck of another tank, and returned with them to an aid station. Staff Sergeant Biles’ heroic and selfless performance reflects the high traditions of the military service. Entered military service from Polkton, North Carolina.
