Biography

Peter McDonagh joined the territorials in Glasgow 1934 and was later transferred to the Cameronian regiment 7th batallion before WW2. He survived Dunkirk and was awarded the MM for his part in rescuing wounded soldiers amidst heavy machine gun fire and mortar bombs. This all took place during the liberation of Walcheren Island, Holland. McDonagh then continued through to Germany with his battalion until the war ended.

"On the 27 Oct 44, during the adv of the 7th BN The Camerons and (Scottish Rifles) B Coy advanced to within approx 300 yrds of the windmill area map ref Belgium and N France Sh 2, 282188 where they came under very hy mortar and SA fire from enemy who were in a very strong locality in the windmill area. As a result of this fire, B Coy suffered 32 cas incl their Coy Comd Maj Gray. L Cpl McDonagh, along with two other stretcher bearers, evacuated the cas under intense mortar and lt automatic fire. They were completely fearless and never during the whole did they attempt to take cover."
