"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain on December 26 to 30, 1943. Displaying great courage and outstanding qualities of leadership during a desperate attack on hostile pill boxes, Corporal Proud with but eight men made a gallant stand against the enemy on December 28 staunchly protecting his company's right flank under extremely heavy Japanese fire. By his tireless efforts and his correct appraisal of the situation throughout this critical period Corporal Proud contributed in a large measure to the success of this hazardous operation. His inspiring conduct and indomitable fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
