Citation:
"For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on 8 March 1945 in the vicinity of *****, Germany. Infantrymen led by tanks were advancing over open terrain. When they were 1500 yard from their objective the infantrymen were pinned down by a heavy enemy artillery barrage. Private Crowningshield and another man of his artillery liaison party were among the first to resume the advance, instilling courage in the infantrymen who followed. Private Crowningshield's courage and utter disregard for his personal safety were an inspiration to all who saw him."
